Saving Slaughter Bound Horses & Donkeys

Did you know approximately 24,000 horses were shipped to Mexico or Canada last year to be slaughtered. Slaughter is a brutal and terrifying end for horses, and it is not humane. Horses are shipped for more than 24 hours at a time without food, water or rest in crowded trucks. They are often seriously injured or killed in transit.

Horses are skittish by nature (owing to their heightened fight-or-flight response), which makes accurate pre-slaughter stunning difficult. As a result, horses often endure repeated blows and sometimes remain conscious during dismemberment—this is rarely a quick, painless death. Before the last domestic plant closed in 2007, the USDA documented in the slaughter pipeline rampant cruelty violations and severe injuries to horses.

We would like to thank everyone who has previously donated to this campaign through social media. As a sanctuary we feel strongly about saving and rehabilitating animals who have been sent to an auction, specifically those that have found themselves in the “loose pen.” This is a costly endeavor due to sale prices, travel, veterinary and farrier care needed along with any extra attention the animals need.
Upon the impending costs we have decided to initiate the “Sanctuary Salvation Campaign.” This campaign will be a fund designated solely to future costs involved with auctions.
If you would like to donate to this campaign, please specify in your donation. Once we feel we have the funds (and volunteers) to return to the auction we will do so and help as many animals as we can with the funds generated from these specific donations.

We quite literally couldn’t do this without our supporters, you are a key piece of what we are doing with the sanctuary. We thank you for your support and the journey we are experiencing together.
After seeing the sheer amount of sadness, fear, panic, and defeat in these animals today we know this is going to be a large piece of the animal pillar of the sanctuary.
